Plan that could remove some navigational buoys from Maine coast is now on hold

- Boothbay Harbormaster Captain Peter Ripley warned local mariners and recreational boaters rely on fog and bell buoys to avoid collisions and lost boats, especially small craft.
- In a statement late Tuesday, the agency said there will be no changes to the aids to navigation system until further analysis is complete, and Rear Adm. Michael Platt thanked the public for its input.
- The Coast Guard, which maintains nearly 45,000 navigational aids nationwide, proposed removing 233 buoys and adjusting nearby markers, but public commenters forced further review.
