Plan for extra public holiday for millions
NSW may add a public holiday Monday after Anzac Day on weekends in 2026 and 2027 to match WA and ACT, where workers get an extra day off, Premier Minns said.
- On Thursday, NSW Premier Chris Minns said the government is considering granting an additional weekday public holiday since Anzac Day falls on a weekend in 2026 and 2027.
- Because Anzac Day falls on a weekend in 2026 and 2027, NSW, which currently has 12 statewide public holidays in 2026, is reviewing the holiday schedule.
- Minns emphasised consultation with the Returned and Services League, saying 'This is a decision that we've got to make with the RSL in particular, so we're going to have a conversation about it for this year'.
- Wes Lambert, Australian Restaurant and Cafe Association CEO, warned, 'This is a terrible idea,' as restaurants and cafes pay between 75 and 100 per cent of revenue in wages on public holidays, while Business NSW declined to comment.
- The proposal would align NSW with Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory by shifting the holiday following Saturday, April 25, though only WA and the ACT get Monday off.
