Plan for changes to role of trustees in Ontario coming early next year: minister

On Dec. 5, 2025, Ontario Education Minister Paul Calandra said he will decide early in the new year on changes to trustees' roles, citing low participation and legal differences.
Calandra pointed to governance and turnout problems as 40 per cent of trustees were acclaimed and recent by‑elections in other provinces recorded a 1 per cent turnout.
Saying he could act quickly, Calandra said he could rid all English public trustees `in one fell swoop`, noting Catholic and French school boards retain Charter and constitutional guarantees.
Student family help offices will be opened in each board to track parental issues, giving parents case file visibility and reducing teacher burdens, Calandra said.
Amid cabinet review and legal checks, Calandra has delayed his end-of-year timeline while examining Charter and constitutional issues, and has assumed supervision of Near North District School Board and Ottawa‑Carleton District Board.
