‘Pivotal’ Archbishop Sheen ‘Opened the Door to the Evangelization of the World,’ Says Bishop Barron

Bishop Robert Barron called Sheen a model for modern evangelization as 50,000 tickets were sold for the beatification events, organizers said.

  • The Catholic Church beatified Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen on Thursday at The Dome in St. Louis, recognizing the 20th-century theologian and media pioneer as 'Blessed.'
  • Pope Francis approved the beatification in 2019, confirming the 2010 miracle involving James Fulton Engstrom, who had been stillborn and without a pulse for 61 minutes. The Diocese of Peoria, Illinois, had opened the canonization cause in 2002.
  • Archbishop Sheen's jawbone served as the principal relic presented during the Mass. Msgr explained that because Sheen "spoke so eloquently" and "taught in word" to proclaim the Gospel, the jaw became the major relic.
  • Emceed by Katie Prejean McGrady, the "Celebrate Sheen Show" featured Bishop Louis Tylka and Cardinal Timothy Dolan reflecting on Archbishop Sheen's "passionate devotion" to the Most Blessed Sacrament.
  • Advancement toward sainthood requires a second miracle attributed to Archbishop Sheen after 2019. Bishop Tylka reported that six miracles are currently under investigation by the Holy See, the next step toward declaring Sheen a saint.
