Pipeline Peril: Oil Spill in Uckermark
- Late on Wednesday, state authorities in Brandenburg reported a major oil spill at the Gramzow pumping station, releasing roughly 200,000 liters from pipelines connecting the Schwedt refinery to Rostock.
- PCK spokeswoman said sabotage could be ruled out while officials described the incident as an accident and Alexander Trenn, Schwedt fire department, reported a pressure of around 20 bar.
- Around 100 fire department officers and about 25 company employees responded using specialist clean-up machinery, and local broadcaster rbb reported the leak was mostly plugged by 19:45 local time.
- Situated near large nature reserves, the spill threatens forests and the Oder River near the Polish border, while PCK's Schwedt refinery processes 11.5 million metric tons a year.
- The volume involved would fill a little less than one-tenth of an Olympic pool, and the refinery's location next to another national park complicates clean-up efforts and environmental remediation.
