Former QB Philip Rivers Nearing Return to NC State as Next Football Coach, Reports Say
On Sunday, NC State finalized a deal to hire former NFL star Philip Rivers as head coach, succeeding Dave Doeren, who was fired in October after a 31-28 loss to Stanford.
Following Doeren's firing on October 24, the Wolfpack began searching for a new leader after a 31-28 loss to Stanford dropped the team to 3-4. The program sought to revitalize its stagnant football fortunes.
A 44-year-old former NFL quarterback, Rivers has coached St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama, since 2021, where his son Gunner Rivers is a four-star recruit committed to the Wolfpack.
While Russell Wilson also interviewed for the vacancy, Rivers is reportedly moving to finalize his contract this week. The NC State Board of Trustees could approve the deal in upcoming scheduled meetings.
Hiring Rivers, who has never coached at the college level, represents a strategic move to reignite the program. Success depends on his ability to transition from high school football to the college game.
