There was just one catch: beautiful things were plentiful, but to buy them, you had to pay in dollars (or with so-called gift certificates), not złoty. Pewex stores became legendary. Every visit to Pewex was a thrill, and any deodorant or alcohol purchased there was reserved for special occasions.
