Two years after the re-election of Ursula von der Leyen as head of the European Commission, at least 20 setbacks for the environment and health in Europe were made. Some 30 further setbacks could be endorsed in the coming months. Yet it was Ursula von der Leyen who set up the European Green Pact during his previous term. Behind these setbacks: the right and the far right, but also the lobbying of large companies and foreign powers.
At the initiative of the Climate Action Network, a dozen NGOs published on Monday 6 July a count of 20 "dangerous" setbacks in the European Union since July 2024, with negative consequences for the environment and the health of citizens. At the heart of the majorities making this detrictness possible: the French right-wing and extreme right-wing parties.

Twenty measures to deregulate or weaken environmental law have been adopted since 2024 at the level of the European Union; thirty further setbacks are under discussion, including non-governmental organisations.
In a new report, ten associations - the Climate Action Network and nine NGOs, including Générations futures or France Nature Environnement - decipher the European dynamics affecting environmental standards, with the help of the right and the far right. They identify 20 setbacks in two years, and alert about 30 others planned in the coming months.
