Ukraine, Russia, US Negotiators in Abu Dhabi for Talks
Diplomats focus on resolving eastern Ukraine's territorial status amid ongoing conflict and recent Russian missile strikes disrupting civilian infrastructure, officials said.
- Today, negotiators from Ukraine, Russia and the United States meet in Abu Dhabi to advance talks aimed at ending the four-year war, set to last today and tomorrow after being postponed last weekend due to what the Kremlin called scheduling issues.
- The main issue is the status of eastern Ukrainian territory, with Russia demanding Ukraine pull its troops from the Donbas and seeking recognition of seized land, while Ukraine rejects ceding ground.
- A massive Russian drone and missile barrage struck Ukraine's energy grid, leaving hundreds of thousands in Kyiv without heat this year, while firefighters extinguished a strike fire in Kramatorsk yesterday.
- Ukraine will be represented by Security Council chief Rustem Umerov, hailed for diplomatic `wonders`, while Russia’s negotiator Igor Kostyukov is a sanctioned military intelligence director; past diplomacy failed and Russia threatens to take the rest of Donetsk region.
- At stake is control of Donetsk, where Ukraine still holds around one-fifth, and AFP analysis says Russia would need 18 months to conquer it; the majority of the Ukrainian public opposes any deal ceding territory.
