Florida Woman Killed by Falling Tree During Hurricane Isaias Landfall
The woman was pinned under a large tree after Isaias made landfall, and officials said at least one Florida death was confirmed.
On Friday night, Hurricane Isaias made landfall in the Panhandle, causing a fatal tree collapse at a home on Flagler Drive in Pensacola, marking the first confirmed storm-related death in Florida.
Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons confirmed on Saturday morning that rescue units responded to the residence after receiving reports of a fallen tree, locating the victim pinned beneath debris shortly after landfall.
Inside the home, the woman was lying next to her husband when the tree collapsed; her stepson recounted that the husband also was struck and used an Apple Watch to contact help.
Her stepson said, "My dad got smashed under the tree. She went very quickly," and shared he had been "dropping trees all morning, crying and carrying on" before receiving the devastating news.
Nearly 700,000 customers were without power by midday as Hurricane Isaias spawned additional fatalities, including at least one in Alabama, while forecasters warned flooding could stretch into the southern Appalachians.
Jenn Biggs Williams was in the living room when she was killed by a tree, writes the New York Post. “She was my world,” says her husband Joey Williams.
