Penticton Named Top Canadian City on New Global Travel List, 5th Overall
The city saw a 137% jump in searches and was one of only two Canadian destinations on the list.
Penticton placed fifth on Skyscanner's list of fastest-rising travel destinations, recording a 137 per cent increase in search volume year-over-year. The ranking positions the South Okanagan city alongside major tourism hubs in Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean.
Located in the South Okanagan, the destination is surrounded by 88 wineries within a 20-minute drive. Lonely Planet named Penticton Canada's Craft Beer Capital in 2020, establishing its reputation among food and beverage travelers.
Penticton is one of two places globally situated between two lakes, sharing this distinction with Interlaken, Switzerland. Rock climbing, paddling, boating, and hundreds of kilometres of hiking and cycling routes draw outdoor enthusiasts year-round.
Kevin Pearce, executive director at Visit Penticton, said he is "incredibly proud" to see the city ranked alongside global destinations. Many visitors compare the local landscape to some of the world's most iconic regions, Pearce added.
Alongside Tofino on Vancouver Island, Penticton was one of only two Canadian cities to make the list. With a population of around 40,000, the city sits less than 65 kilometres north of the U.S. border.
