Penguins pick courtship pebbles at Edinburgh Zoo as breeding season begins

Over 1,000 painted pebbles were offered by children and visitors to gentoo penguins at Edinburgh Zoo to aid nest building and mate selection this breeding season.

  • Last month, Edinburgh Zoo said breeding season has begun at the penguin habitat and gentoo penguins use painted pebbles for courtship.
  • Children from Edinburgh Children's Hospital Charity have painted and hand-delivered more than 1,000 pebbles for the penguins for a fourth year.
  • Fan-Favourite penguins Mittens and Muffins paired up again this year to build a nest after being the first gentoo penguin couple to have chicks last year.
  • The zoo provided webcams and incentives so visitors could watch if their pebble was picked, and successful visitors could get a chance to name a chick.
  • With a colony of more than 100 gentoo penguins, visitors who purchased pebbles participated in the Feb. 18 event, supporting nesting selection.
