Pembrokeshire: Major sea rescue launched for three climbers off coast
Rescue teams from multiple agencies responded to an emergency involving three climbers at a popular limestone cliff site, with operations beginning around 4pm, Coastguard said.
- HM Coastguard said `HM Coastguard responded to an incident involving three climbers at St Govans Head in Pembrokeshire today, 12 February` as a major rescue operation was launched at about 4pm with coastguard teams and aircraft responding.
- The headland's terrain is notable for limestone cliffs up to 40m high within Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and about 300 recognised climbing routes, some graded Extreme 8.
- Dyfed‑Powys Police said one person was pronounced dead at the scene and two climbers were taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening; next of kin have been informed.
- At present it remains unclear whether the climbers were on the cliff face or elsewhere or how the emergency call was initiated, and Dyfed‑Powys Police were also in attendance alongside coastguard and air rescue teams.
- Such incidents have previously prompted a lifeboat deployment at 4.08pm from the RNLI's Angle Lifeboat Station, while last August a climber at Saddle Head was airlifted to hospital after a fall.
