Paterson officials have agreed to pay a $300,000 settlement to the family of a man fatally shot when a Paterson police officer’s gun discharged at a Fourth of July barbecue in 2016. Xavier Cuevas-Soto, 23, was attending a party at the Totowa home of Officer Christopher Benevento when the shooting occurred, according to a lawsuit filed by the victim’s family in 2019.
