Parti Québécois heads a crowded election field into provincial election vote
The PQ’s rise comes as five parties compete and voters focus on costs, economic uncertainty and a possible sovereignty referendum.
Voters head to the polls on Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, in a Quebec provincial election where Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon has pulled away from the pack at the campaign's end.
Following Legault's resignation earlier this year, the governing Coalition Avenir has faced declining poll numbers and criticism from rivals over eight years of government spending and unfulfilled promises.
Quebec Liberal Leader Charles Milliard suggested on Friday the CAQ campaign is "game over," while Quebec Conservative Leader Duhaime used "Yes" and "No" referendum buses to symbolically block sovereignty plans.
Political analyst Lamoureux notes the Parti has become a "party of refuge" for French-speaking Quebecers seeking change, while a minority scenario would force the winner to seek cooperation with other parties.
Five parties are competing for 125 seats—a density unseen in 50 years—ensuring whoever wins will preside over a legislature significantly different from the one elected four years ago.
