Shinnecock Scouting Report: Scheffler and McIlroy Say Wide Fairways and Big Rough for US Open
McIlroy says he still wants two more golf trophies and calls Shinnecock Hills fairways wider than expected after scouting the U.S. Open venue.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Rory McIlroy identified the Memorial Tournament as one he "would love to win," hoping to shake host Jack Nicklaus's hand at the 18th green.
This week marks the 50th anniversary of the event at Muirfield Village, and McIlroy, who has known Nicklaus for nearly 20 years, aims to claim the title.
McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler visited Shinnecock Hills recently to scout the upcoming U.S. Open venue, where both players observed that the fairways are "very generous."
While fairways expanded, Scheffler warned the green complexes remain "extraordinarily difficult," and McIlroy suggested maintaining speeds around 11 on the Stimpmeter would provide a fair test.
The U.S. Open begins in two short weeks, offering McIlroy a chance to complete the career Grand Slam on what he described as "one of the best championship tests in the country.
