Parker teacher detained by ICE during immigration appointment, school says
Marina Ortiz and her family were detained during a routine ICE appointment despite valid work authorization, with efforts underway to secure their return from a Texas detention center.
- On Friday, Marina Ortiz, a fifth-grade teacher at Global Village Academy-Douglas County, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement during a routine Centennial appointment and sent with her family to a Texas detention facility.
- Ortiz's employer completed I-9 verification and a Colorado Bureau of Investigation background check, and Ortiz holds valid employment authorization through spring 2029, Michael Henderson said.
- Outside a Durango field office, videos show protesters blowing whistles and projecting slogans while social media posts say family members were arrested on their way to school and a masked agent grabbed a phone, advocacy groups including Compañeros Four Corners Immigrant Resource Center reported.
- The school is working closely with its legal team and outside immigration attorneys to facilitate the family's return to Colorado, Douglas County leaders sought an emergency school board meeting, and a GoFundMe fundraiser raised more than $7,100.
- With visa policy in flux, Global Village Academy Collaborative recently joined a lawsuit challenging the Trump administration's $100,000 H-1B fee and relies on visas to recruit world language teachers.
