Parents Who Murdered Baby Have 'Unduly Lenient' Sentences Increased
The appeal court said the original minimum terms understated repeated abuse and the severity of the fatal attack on Miguel.
On Tuesday, the Court of Appeal increased the minimum prison terms for parents Klevi Pirjani and Nivalda Pirjani after ruling their original sentences for murdering their 13-week-old son, Miguel Pirjani, were "unduly lenient."
Judges ruled the original sentences failed to account for "routine" assaults that escalated in severity, culminating in the "particularly callous" murder of the infant, who sustained 41 bone fractures across multiple incidents.
Attorney General Ellie Reeves referred the case arguing the initial terms did not "meet the justice of this terrible case"; the court increased Klevi's minimum to 21 years and six months, while Nivalda's rose to 17 years and nine months.
Klevi and Nivalda watched proceedings via video link from HMP Wakefield and HMP Styal, respectively, showing no reaction as judges concluded the original sentencing "significantly underestimated the aggravating factors."
Merseyside Police Detective Inspector Holly Chance said "Baby Miguel's life was cruelly cut short" by his parents, reaffirming the force remains committed to protecting children and bringing offenders before the courts.
