Suspected Russian Disinformation Campaign Uses AI Videos to Target Democratic Senate Candidates
Experts said the clips likely came from a Russian-linked network and used AI to make damaging election falsehoods appear real.
Videos believed to be produced with artificial intelligence and linked to Russia are targeting Democratic Senate candidates Sherrod Brown and James Talarico with disinformation in the final stretch of midterm voting.
Clemson University professor Darren Linvill linked the videos to Russian network Storm-1516, which previously targeted Kamala Harris and Tim Walz two years ago with similar disinformation tactics.
Dartmouth College professor Hany Farid identified the Brown video as a 'fairly low-tech fake,' while Haya Akbik, who interned for Brown, told The Associated Press that claims in the clip are 'completely made up.'
Social media company X removed the initial posts and suspended associated accounts for violating platform rules; Talarico spokesperson JT Ennis denounced the content as slanderous deepfakes.
Despite removals, copies persist online with hundreds of shares, illustrating disinformation's reach; Akbik emphasized the need for Congress to regulate 'AI slop on the internet,' citing damage to reputations.
Videos manipulated with advanced technology attack Democratic candidates, using images and real names to spread falsehoods. Platforms try to curb misinformation, but content continues to circulate, showing the complexity of controlling these threats.
