Parents of 13-Year-Old Killed in Orange County E-Moto Crash Charged
Prosecutors say the parents bought the teen a faster electric motorcycle despite prior crashes and a broken leg, leading to child endangerment charges.
On Tuesday, Orange County prosecutors charged parents Vu Thanh Nguyen and Hong Cuc Thi Nguyen with child endangerment following the May death of their 13-year-old son, Benson Nguyen, in an electric motorcycle crash.
Prosecutors allege the Santa Ana couple purchased a "faster and more powerful E-Moto" for their son despite warnings about his reckless riding and a broken leg sustained six months before he died.
Data from a monitoring app showed Benson was traveling 43 miles per hour when he lost control on Magnolia Street in Garden Grove, striking a center median and a concrete light pole on May 7.
"When parents refuse to hold their children accountable and that refusal to parent results in unspeakable tragedy, then I have no choice but to hold parents accountable," District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a news release.
This case follows a spike in deaths involving electric vehicles, with injuries skyrocketing more than 430% in Southern California, prompting prosecutors to pursue charges against parents knowingly allowing illegal riding.
