RTI International, IBM, Panera among hundreds of jobs cut, factory closures impacting NC

  • The parent company of Panera Bread, owned by JAB Holdings which also owns Krispy Kreme Inc., is closing its fresh-dough production center at 4225 Tudor Lane, Suite 102 in Greensboro, North Carolina, with a last production date of May 21.
  • This closure is part of a broader plan by Panera to close seven similar fresh-dough facilities across its U.S. Territory as reported by Business North Carolina.
  • The Greensboro facility closure will result in the elimination of 80 jobs, including 23 tractor-trailer drivers and 18 packers, as stated in a WARN Act notice filed with the N.C. Commerce Department.
  • Panera said, "As part of this transition, we had to make the difficult decision to close our Greensboro commissary facility," and that the shift to an on-demand baking model allows them to simplify operations and explore new breads.
  • Panera plans to support laid-off employees with severance packages, outplacement services, and assistance with COBRA premiums, including support in finding new roles within Panera, as part of their transition to a new on-demand baking model.
