The National Assembly of Panama approved a new labor regime this Friday that restores benefits to the workers of the American banana company Chiquita Brands, after more than a month of protests and millionaire losses.The employees of Chiquita went on strike on April 28 and until last Wednesday they cut roads in the Caribbean province of Bocas del Toro, bordering Costa Rica, after a pension reform that eliminated some of the benefits they had.
Panama City, 14 Jun (Latin Press) The Panamanian government began today the “Omega” operation, aimed at restoring free transit in the north-western province of Bocas del Toro, after more than a month of road closures and popular protests. The post “Omega” will reopen road closures in the Panamanian province first appeared on Noticias Prensa Latina.
The National Assembly of Panama approved on Friday a new banana law that establishes a special regime of benefits for workers in that sector, as part of the commitment made by the authorities to lift a strike that lasted more than 40 days.
Bill 290 came to the Assembly as part of an agreement between the executive, the legislature and banana trade unionists.
