Floods Affect 1.2 Million and Displace Nearly 250,000 in Pakistan

Authorities evacuated over one million people as three major rivers simultaneously flooded, submerging more than 1,600 villages and destroying crops in Punjab's worst flood emergency in decades.

  • This week, Pakistani authorities evacuated more than 1.1 million people from homes in Punjab province as floodwaters submerged 1,652 villages near the Sutlej, Chenab and Ravi rivers.
  • Officials blamed a mix of heavy rains and excess upstream water from Indian dams, swelling the Ravi, Sutlej and Chenab rivers and triggering unprecedented flooding as weather systems converged over Pakistan.
  • So far, 1,147,000 residents have been rescued, nearly 700 relief and 265 medical camps established, and rescue operations with 2,061 personnel and 176 vehicles saved more than 5,500 people, aided by over 9,000 Civil Defence volunteers.
  • Since late June, floods have killed more than 800 people in Pakistan, with health workers reporting surges in malaria, fever and skin infections as WHO leads disease surveillance efforts.
  • The Pakistan Meteorological Department warned of another strong monsoon between Aug 29 and Sept 2 as Sindh province monitors embankments and prepares for high downstream flows.
