Padres Aim to Break 4-Game Skid, Play the Phillies
The Philadelphia Phillies host the San Diego Padres on Thursday at 1:05 p.m. EDT, with Phillies ace Cristopher Sanchez taking the mound as Philadelphia holds a 32-29 record and San Diego a 32-28 mark.
Sanchez enters on a 44.2 consecutive scoreless inning streak dating to April 30, surpassing Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander's team-record of 41 innings set in 1911.
Sanchez, the +170 favorite for the NL Cy Young, maintains a 58.1% ground-ball rate during this streak and became the only pitcher in the modern era with zero runs allowed and at least 40 strikeouts in a single calendar month.
San Diego right-hander Walker Buehler opposes Sanchez in a rematch of last Wednesday's game, when Buehler took the loss allowing two runs over 5.1 innings in a 3-0 defeat.
Sanchez could reach 50 consecutive scoreless innings tonight, moving closer to Orel Hershiser's MLB record of 59 innings, while the Phillies maintain a 5-0 advantage in the season series against the Padres.
