Owner of Lewiston hospital vastly underestimated scope of May data breach

Covenant Health discovered a ransomware attack exposed sensitive data of nearly 478,200 patients, including about 285,000 in Maine, after a detailed forensic review.

  • On Wednesday, Covenant Health revised the breach impact to 478,188 patients, including nearly 285,000 Maine residents, and began mailing notifications on December 31.
  • Covenant engaged third-party forensic specialists to investigate after an unauthorized party accessed its network on May 18, 2025, and discovered the breach on May 26, 2025.
  • Initially the company reported 7,864 people affected in July, and the investigation found that accessed data may have included names, addresses, dates of birth, medical record numbers, Social Security numbers, insurance and treatment details.
  • Edelson Lechtzin LLP is investigating potential class-action claims, and Covenant is offering affected individuals 12 months of Experian IdentityWorks identity-protection services.
  • The trend has prompted calls to examine rising risks as PSA national secretary Fleur Fitzsimons urged the Privacy Commissioner to reconsider investigating cuts to Health NZ's digital workforce amid a 239% increase in reported health-care data breaches.
