Arnie the Dog’s Owner Learns Fate After Lie
Nathan McKeown pleaded guilty to animal cruelty and driving offences after falsely reporting his ute stolen, leading to a fatal outcome for his dog Arnie, police said.
On Thursday, Nathan Paul McKeown pleaded guilty at Cleveland Magistrates Court to unlawfully killing his dog and driving unlicensed and under the influence.
After a night out, Nathan Paul McKeown falsely claimed his ute and dog had been stolen from Wynnum, obstructing police efforts, court documents show.
Arnie was found dead on November 17 after a member of the public reported a strong odour from the parked ute on Amelia Street, Fortitude Valley; a University of Queensland post-mortem found dehydration and heat stress likely caused death 24 to 48 hours after confinement.
The magistrate sentenced Nathan Paul McKeown to 240 hours of community service and an eight-month driving disqualification, citing his lack of prior record, rehab entry, and remorse.
The case drew national attention, with McKeown's TV appeals and a social media campaign that amassed millions of views, prompting threats, hiding, and job loss for the family.
