Human-Caused Wildfire Burning Out of Control on Vancouver Island
On June 6, 2025, workers from United Steelworkers Local 1-1937 initiated a strike against La-kwa-sa-muqw Forestry LP on Vancouver Island due to unresolved labour disagreements.
The strike followed LKSM’s refusal to remove significant concessions after the contract expired on June 15, 2024, despite multiple bargaining sessions.
USW represents over 5,500 members working under more than 250 employers along the British Columbia coast and islands, advocating for standard rights across the sector.
Brian Butler, President of USW Local 1-1937, stated that by taking action against LKSM, their members are standing up not just for themselves but on behalf of all workers opposing these unjust demands.
The strike emphasizes the union’s intent to prevent erosion of worker rights and calls for LKSM to align with coastal forest industry standards to restore operation stability.
