Ottawa seeking proposals from groups committed to cleaning up 'ghost gear' in water
Ottawa is seeking partners to remove ghost gear after 2,500 tonnes were cleared from Canada’s waters since 2020, the minister said.
Federal Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson announced in Yarmouth that Ottawa has set aside $15 million over the next three years to retrieve discarded fishing equipment from Canadian waters.
Since the fund launched in 2020, it has supported 144 projects worth more than $58.4 million to find, retrieve, and safely dispose of lost, abandoned, and discarded fishing gear.
Thompson says that since 2020, more than 2,500 tonnes of ghost gear have been removed from Canada's waters, preventing harm to marine mammals, fisheries, and habitats.
The federal government has issued a request for proposals from partners committed to cleaning up this equipment, with the closing date for submissions set for June 29.
A New Dalhousie University study details the alarming scope of lost fishing gear at sea in 2026, underscoring the ongoing need for recovery efforts across the country.
