Ottawa says it plans to shutter and sell its Nanisivik naval port
National Defence says the site cost more than $110 million and would need another $200 million before it could fully support Arctic operations.
On Thursday, the Liberal government announced the shutdown of the Nanisivik Naval Facility on Baffin Island and began transitioning it out of operations, with plans to eventually divest the property entirely.
National Defence officials cited the long range of Harry DeWolf-class Arctic offshore patrol vessels as removing the need for a dedicated refuelling base, alongside the site's very short seasonal access window and costly jetty repairs.
The government has spent $110 million on the facility since 2007, though officials noted an additional $200 million would be required to make the site fully operational for sustained naval activity.
Conservative defence critic James Bezan accused the Liberals of rendering the station "virtually unusable," claiming the decision not to heat fuel tanks guaranteed failure to bolster Arctic presence.
The government will consult with Indigenous third parties before finalizing any transfer of the asset as it moves forward with plans to divest the northern property entirely.
