First baby born on Orkney island in 34 years
Islanders celebrated with whisky and a raised flag after the birth, the first on North Ronaldsay since August 1992.
- On September 15, parents Alice Traill Ford and Jorge Suarez welcomed their son, Duncan Wilder Thorstein Traill Suarez Ford, to North Ronaldsay, marking the first newborn on Orkney's most northerly island in more than three decades.
- Traveling more than 5,000 miles from Costa Rica, the family chose to welcome Duncan at Holland House, their ancestral home built by Alice's ancestors in 1727. Alice told BBC Scotland News she wanted her son born into the island's unique energy.
- Following the tradition of the island's former Laird, the couple raised a flag at Holland House to announce the birth. Islanders celebrated by sharing whisky from bottles adorned with a four-leaf clover and a Groatie Buckie.
- Alice named the newborn after her grandfather, the former Laird of North Ronaldsay, to honor his legacy. "I felt like there would be no better name than his to carry on and continue his legacy in the world," she said.
- Accessible via a 20-minute plane journey from Kirkwall, North Ronaldsay is famous for its 13-mile-long drystone wall. Alice confirmed the family will return every summer to maintain their connection to the community.
