Oregon voters decide whether to boost their gas tax as Iran war causes prices at the pump to soar
The referendum would raise the gas tax from 40 cents to 46 cents a gallon and add transit and vehicle fees, officials said.
Oregon voters rejected a 6-cent gas tax increase and related fee hikes passed by Democratic lawmakers to fund road improvements and address the transportation budget gap amid rising pump prices linked to the war with Iran.
Republicans led a successful referendum campaign against the gas tax increase, framing it as worsening affordability during soaring gas prices.
Democratic Governor Tina Kotek and U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley won their primaries easily, while Republican Christine Drazan won the GOP gubernatorial primary and will challenge Kotek in November.
In Oregon's 5th Congressional District, Democrat Janelle Bynum won the primary and will face Republican Patti Adair, with other districts seen as safe for incumbents.
