Feds Intercept ‘Suspicious’ Package Intended for Oregon Election Office
The package was part of a wave of suspicious mail targeting election offices nationwide, with similar incidents reported in Arizona, Louisiana and Minnesota.
Federal officials intercepted a suspicious package addressed to the Oregon Secretary of State's office before it arrived in the state, Secretary of State Tobias Read announced Friday.
NBC News reported Thursday that federal law enforcement was investigating dozens of letters containing white powder mailed to congressional and election offices nationwide, providing context for the Oregon incident.
The FBI and Postal Inspection Service are investigating the mailings, which have also targeted election officials in Minnesota, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Ohio. Preliminary testing showed the powder was not hazardous.
Read stated "no one was harmed" and thanked federal partners for swift action. His office urged local election officials to remain vigilant while preparing to respond if additional packages arrive.
These security concerns emerge just weeks before the Nov 3 election, as Oregon election officials began mailing ballots to all registered voters earlier this week.
