Oregon baby is still battling infant botulism after ByHeart formula exposure
More than 50 infants nationwide were sickened by contaminated formula donated to vulnerable families, prompting a full product recall by manufacturer ByHeart.
- In Portland, a baby contracted infant botulism after drinking donated ByHeart formula tied to a charity program, with Ashaan Carter hospitalized twice and on a feeding tube amid an outbreak sickening over 50 babies nationwide.
- ByHeart’s donation program OpenHearted Initiative supplied formula through nearly two dozen nonprofit partners, including PDX Diaper Bank, distributing nearly 24,000 cans since June 2022.
- Soon after consuming the product, the infant developed severe constipation and muscle weakness, doctors at Randall Children’s Hospital diagnosed presumed infant botulism, and treated him with BabyBIG while he faces developmental setbacks.
- Legal filings have multiplied as at least 18 lawsuits target ByHeart and retailers, and Bill Marler, Seattle food-safety lawyer, asked a federal panel to consolidate cases in New York.
- ByHeart officials said they worked with Baby2Baby and partner groups to pull recalled products and notify families, the FDA inspected plants but released no source, and the CDC reports no new linked cases since Dec. 17.
