OPP want drivers to stay safe over August long weekend
A spotter aircraft will monitor driver behavior as OPP target speeding, impaired driving and seatbelt violations after 3,514 speeding charges last year.
- On Wednesday, Ontario Provincial Police charged three Essex County motorists with impaired driving, including two involved in single-vehicle collisions in Lakeshore and Kingsville.
- These charges coincide with the upcoming Civic Day long weekend, when OPP officials traditionally increase traffic enforcement to prevent unsafe driving that resulted in nine fatalities last year.
- Last year's holiday weekend saw police lay 3,514 speeding charges, 512 seatbelt-related charges, and 204 impaired driving charges; offenders now face 90-day administrative license suspensions and seven-day vehicle impoundments.
- Deputy Commissioner Karen Meyer said, "As first responders, OPP officers see the devastating consequences of poor driving decisions," urging motorists to prioritize safety by slowing down and driving sober.
- Central Region OPP will utilize the Airplane Enforcement Program from July 30 to August 2, monitoring driver behavior from the sky to enforce traffic laws and the Slow Down, Move Over legislation.
