OpenAI Could Launch Its First AI Agent Smartphone in 2027
OpenAI is fast-tracking development of its first "AI agent phone" for mass production in the first half of 2027, according to industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, aiming to strengthen its market position.
Following the acquisition of Jony Ive's startup in May 2025, OpenAI pivoted from a screenless "third core device" concept that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called the "coolest piece of technology that the world will have ever seen."
The device will utilize a customized MediaTek Dimensity 9600 processor built on TSMC's N2P node, featuring dual AI processors and an enhanced HDR pipeline to improve what the AI "perceives" through the camera.
Kuo projects combined 2027-2028 shipments reaching around 30 million units, positioning OpenAI as a direct hardware rival to Apple and its AirPods, with Luxshare Precision Industry and Qualcomm as primary partners.
Revised production targets reflect OpenAI's broader IPO goals and intensifying agent phone competition, shifting from previous roadmaps that had pushed timelines to "less than two years" late last month.
