OpenAI Unveils Jalepeno, Its First Custom AI Chip
Broadcom said the chip offers about 50% cost savings versus typical AI graphics processing units and will help OpenAI reduce reliance on Nvidia.
- On Wednesday, OpenAI and Broadcom unveiled their debut custom chip, Jalapeno, marking the ChatGPT maker's first entry into artificial intelligence silicon with initial deployment planned for late 2026.
- Seeking to manage surging demand for its AI services, OpenAI aims to "build the full stack behind its models and products" and reduce reliance on Nvidia, which has dominated infrastructure since the generative AI boom began.
- Broadcom Chief Executive Officer Hock Tan reported the "Intelligence Processor" ASIC offers cost savings of roughly 50% compared to typical graphics processing units, with OpenAI completing the design in nine months.
- Finalized chips will be integrated into large data centers from OpenAI-backer Microsoft Corp. starting later this year, while Tan said the companies plan future versions in 2028 and annually thereafter.
- To address surging demand for advanced silicon, OpenAI has signed agreements with Nvidia rival Advanced Micro Devices and Cerebras, having forged a deal earlier this year with Amazon Web Services for Trainium chips.

OpenAI unveils Jalapeño chip for large-scale inference workloads
OpenAI has unveiled its first custom AI accelerator, called Jalapeño, marking the company’s move into chip design as it looks to reduce the cost and improve the efficiency of running large language models (LLMs). Developed in partnership with Broadcom and Celestica, the chip is designed specifically for AI inference — the process of generating responses from trained AI models. OpenAI said early testing shows Jalapeño delivers significantly bette…
Broadcom and OpenAI debut Jalapeño Intelligence Processor, plot an Apple-like move to 'build the full stack'

JIP, for Jalapeño Intelligence Processor, is inference-native and little is known about the har…
OpenAI unveils first custom AI inference chip, Jalapeño, with Broadcom — and its development was sped-up with OpenAI's own models
OpenAI and Broadcom this morning unveiled their first custom AI accelerator chip named "Jalapeño," positioning it is as a purpose-built processor for large language model (LLM) inference, rather than the more general GPUs offered by the likes of Nvidia or AMD. According to its creators, Jalapeño is designed to support workloads behind ChatGPT, Codex, the API and future agentic products, though notably, both OpenAI's and Broadcom's news releases …
