OpenAI Is Building a Smart Speaker
OpenAI’s debut device is expected to use a new voice model and humanlike interactions as smart speaker shipments keep falling, IDC said.
- OpenAI, a top developer of AI models, is developing a "humanlike" rechargeable smart speaker designed to serve as an AI companion, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
- To build its hardware division, OpenAI spent $6.5 billion last year to acquire io Products, a startup co-founded by Apple design veteran Jony Ive, and hired more than 400 former Apple employees.
- Jitesh Ubrani, director of worldwide device trackers at IDC, reports the smart speaker market is shrinking, with shipment volumes dwindling to "tens of millions units" following 2022.
- Apple sued OpenAI last week, alleging the company stole trade secrets to accelerate device development; OpenAI responded it has "no interest in other companies' trade secrets."
- OpenAI plans to unveil the speaker this year before a 2027 release, though the company lost $38.5 billion in 2025 and doesn't expect profitability until at least 2030.
