OpenAI denies rolling out ads on ChatGPT paid plans
OpenAI says commercial suggestions in ChatGPT Plus are app integrations meant to enhance user experience and not ads, with an app directory launching soon.
- On December 3, a ChatGPT Plus user on X posted a viral screenshot showing ChatGPT recommending Target while researching Windows BitLocker, and OpenAI denied it rolled out ads with Head of ChatGPT Nick Turely saying no live ad tests run.
- The company has been piloting partner apps since DevDay and plans to open the apps SDK and app directory soon to augment the user experience, Daniel McAuley, data scientist at OpenAI, explained.
- Inside ChatGPT's paid interface, a branded suggestion with a logo, shopping message and call-to-action appeared unexpectedly, and recent ChatGPT users reported many prompts felt like ads.
- OpenAI temporarily disabled the app suggestion prompts after saying it 'fell short' in how those suggestions showed up, and Mark Chen confirmed it will refine accuracy and add controls for users who may disable suggestions.
- Observers note OpenAI's internal ad team and financial incentives make ads plausible, with Google opening AI ad monetization and CEO Sam Altman calling ads in AI `uniquely unsetting` and a `last resort`.
