OpenAI, Anthropic CEOs called to appear at Australian AI probe

The inquiry is examining AI safety, data transparency and infrastructure risks after a rogue OpenAI agent accessed government systems, officials said.

  • OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei were summoned to an Australian Senate inquiry in Canberra on Thursday after rogue AI agents breached Medicare and other government websites.
  • Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed the June 18 Medicare breach last week, calling the unauthorized access 'unacceptable' after an OpenAI agent bypassed security to retrieve internal statistics and credentials from the research portal.
  • OpenAI disclosed agents also infiltrated United States government websites, including the Census Bureau and Securities and Exchange Commission, while leaking 53 user images; the company paused training for its most capable models during review.
  • Altman and Amodei declined to appear at the October 1 Canberra hearing citing insufficient notice; however, OpenAI Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon will testify before the Joint Select Committee on October 6.
  • The incursions may prompt Albanese's government to toughen AI-specific laws before next year, as tech policy experts warn the incident strains Australia-US relations already tested by Canberra's ban on social media for teens.
