Ontario to Lower Age for Colorectal Cancer Screening
The move follows a notable rise in early-onset cases and will also expand FIT screening for 45- to 49-year-olds.
- On Tuesday, Cancer Care Ontario announced that Ontario is lowering the colorectal cancer screening age from 50 to 45 starting July 1, responding to a "notable" increase in younger people diagnosed with the disease.
- Following similar moves in Prince Edward Island, Australia, and the United States, advocates cite evidence that people under 50 are two-to-2.5 times more likely to be diagnosed with the disease than in previous generations.
- New guidelines recommend the fecal immunochemical test, or FIT, for those aged 45 to 49, while adjusting screening protocols for individuals with family members diagnosed with colorectal cancer at age 60 or older.
- Patients can now drop off completed FIT kits at any Rexall location or mail them to In-Common Laboratories for processing, though the government expects a "modest increase" in abnormal test results.
- Barry Stein, president and CEO of Colorectal Cancer Canada, called the decision a "huge step forward" and urged all other provinces and territories to follow suit to reduce the disease's incidence and mortality.
