ONTARIO, CANADA, AUG 11 – Ontario reached only 75% of its 125,000 housing start target in 2024 despite counting new housing types and investing over $4 billion in housing initiatives, official data shows.
- On Aug. 11, 2025, in Toronto, the Ontario government recorded just 94,753 housing starts in 2024, below the 125,000 target.
- Under Premier Doug Ford’s 1.5 million-home plan, the Ontario government set a 125,000-unit goal for 2024, rising to 150,000 in 2026, supported by the Building Faster Fund.
- Data from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation shows around 27,400 housing starts until June, a 25% decline from last year, indicating worsening trends in Ontario.
- In 2024, only 15 municipalities met their housing targets, eight managed 80,000 or above, and 27 including Ottawa, Mississauga, and Brampton failed to meet their goals.
- To boost housing starts, a Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing spokesperson said Ontario is supporting efforts with over $3 billion in investments and $1.2 billion through the Building Faster Fund.
