Ontario minister pledges better communication during wildfire season
The province says the upgrades will improve response capacity after about 200 fires forced evacuations and drew calls for a public inquiry.
Ontario Natural Resources Minister Mike Harris pledged better communication today, Sept 14, 2026, to improve how the province alerts communities when forest fires approach.
About 200 fires raged in northern Ontario during July, forcing evacuations of more than a dozen communities, many of them remote First Nations.
Harris announced today that the province is investing more than $20 million to upgrade two major wildfire attack bases in northwestern Ontario.
First Nations leaders criticized the government's response this summer, alleging they received late warnings or no information as fires spread across their lands.
Leaders have called for a public inquiry into the province's wildfire response, though Harris has not committed to fulfilling the request.
