FireSmart funding applications opening for 2027 wildfire preparedness

On Sunday, the B.C. Ministry of Forests announced $15 million in 2027 funding for the FireSmart Community Funding and Supports program. Minister of Forests Ravi Parmar said the investment aims to help communities prepare for future wildfire seasons.
Since 2018, the FireSmart program has supported over 300 communities, including 158 First Nations. In 2026, 47 municipalities received $9.3 million in FCFS funding for home assessments, rebates, and fuel-reduction projects.
Francyne Joe, executive director of the First Nations' Emergency Services Society, stated funding helps communities build capacity. The Province utilizes techniques like commercial thinning and prescribed burns to reduce wildfire fuel and limit fire intensity.
The government expanded the mandate of BC Timber Sales to incorporate wildfire-risk-reduction fuel management into harvesting operations. Delivered in partnership with the Union of B.C. Municipalities and the First Nations' Emergency Services Society, the initiative integrates fire prevention into standard forestry.
Starting October 1, 2026, local governments and First Nations can apply for the 2027 funding intake. The program supports wildfire-risk-reduction activities including education, training, home assessments, and community planning.
