1 Person 'Unaccounted for' After Massive Blaze Destroys Former Victoria Hotel: Police
Investigators are examining the cause as crews used a controlled demolition and police said all nine residents had been accounted for earlier.
On Monday, the Victoria Police Department confirmed one person "associated to the address" at 760 Queens Ave. remains unaccounted for following the fire that destroyed the former Travellers Inn.
Flames broke out early Saturday at the former hotel, forcing crews to adopt a "defensive posture" due to intense heat before performing a "controlled demolition" of the structure.
Victoria Fire Chief Dan Atkinson said a recent inspection found "critical life safety systems" satisfactory, though officials were working with the landlord to reduce an "excessive accumulation of goods."
Systematic debris removal will begin within 24 hours, with investigators using "the utmost care and control" to locate the unaccounted individual and determine the fire's cause.
Investigators will remain on scene for several days as VicPD asks anyone with relevant information to contact the non-emergency line at 250-995-7654, extension 1, referencing file 26-45101.
