One of the men who went missing in sea off Devon coast named
An extensive multi-agency search failed to locate two men missing after Christmas Day swims amid strong winds and rough seas, with one man believed to have attempted a rescue.
- Local family named Matthew Upham, 63, owner of Matthew Upham Antiques, as one of two men who disappeared at Budleigh Salterton on the morning of December 25.
- Hundreds had gathered for Christmas Day dips despite a yellow weather warning for wind, while a BBC journalist reported very rough seas with large breaking waves at Budleigh Salterton and nearby Exmouth beaches.
- RNLI lifeboat crews from Exmouth, Teignmouth and Torbay, Exmouth and Beer Coastguard Rescue Teams, plus coastguard helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, pulled several people from the water.
- After nearly seven hours of searching, the operation was called off and lifeboat crews stood down around 17:00, with Devon and Cornwall Police saying both men remain missing and inquiries ongoing.
