One killed, two injured in Ukrainian drone attack on Russia's Volgograd region, governor says

Regional authorities said the strike also hit residential buildings and energy infrastructure as Russia reported intercepting 208 Ukrainian drones nationwide.

  • On Friday, Volgograd Oblast Governor Andrey Bocharov reported a Ukrainian drone strike on a synthetic-fiber plant in Volzhsky killed two people: a 60-year-old man at the scene and a 55-year-old woman who later died from injuries.
  • Unverified reports indicate a Lukoil-operated oil refinery in Volgograd also caught fire during the overnight attacks. The facility processed 13.7 million metric tons of oil in 2024, making it a frequent Ukrainian target for disrupting Russia's energy revenue.
  • Astra reported the strike site lies two kilometers from the Titan-Barrikady military plant, a major facility producing missile launchers. Russia's Defense Ministry said it intercepted 208 Ukrainian drones nationwide between Thursday night and Friday morning.
  • In the Bryansk border region, Acting Governor Yegor Kovalchuk reported a drone strike on the village of Solovyovka killed one person. The village sits directly across the frontier from Ukraine's northern Chernihiv region.
  • Kyiv officials justify these strikes as retaliation for Russia's ongoing occupation of Ukrainian territory. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy maintains his forces remain in their best position for months along the 1,200-km front line.
