One dead and hundreds ill in UK salmonella outbreak
FDA investigators say 95% of patients ate at Mexican-style restaurants before illness, and recalls now cover products sold at major U.S. chains.
One person has died and hundreds fallen ill in a nationwide salmonella outbreak across the UK. The UK Health Security Agency is investigating the wave of infections impacting individuals throughout the country.
According to the UKHSA, the infections "may be linked to eggs imported from outside of the UK." The agency confirmed one fatality associated with this specific outbreak of food poisoning.
Between August 11 last year and August 1 this year, 207 cases were identified across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Nearly 38 per cent required hospital admission, with patients ranging from babies to 90-year-olds.
Dr. Kimon Andreas Karatzas, a professor in food microbiology at Reading University, suggests the cost of living crisis may be driving more people to prepare food at home, increasing cross-contamination risks.
Salmonella typically triggers gastroenteritis with symptoms including diarrhoea, stomach cramps, fever, and vomiting. Health officials advise washing hands thoroughly after bathroom use and before handling food, ensuring all food is cooked thoroughly.
