One dead after sword attack at Swedish school

Police shot and detained the 18-year-old suspect as investigators searched for a motive after the attack left two teenage boys seriously injured.

  • On Friday, an 18-year-old man armed with a sword attacked students at the Brinell School in Fagersta, killing a 17-year-old girl and seriously injuring two others. Police arrested the suspect, investigating the case as murder and attempted murder.
  • Vastmanland County officials confirmed the two seriously injured boys are ages 12 and 17, while a third student was slightly injured and discharged from hospital. National police executed two house searches in connection with the suspect, though no official motive exists.
  • Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson lamented the violence, stating, "We do not yet know what lies behind the act," as residents gathered at a municipal memorial site Saturday morning to lay flowers. Around 70 people attended the site.
  • Authorities stated they have no reason to believe other perpetrators were involved, while investigators are currently interviewing many witnesses as the investigation proceeds. The regional state of emergency declared Friday has since ended.
  • Sweden has seen a series of violent school attacks over recent years, including a 2015 incident in Trollhattan where a 21-year-old stabbed three people to death, and a 2022 attack in Malmo killing two teachers. Last year, an attack in Orebro killed 11 people, prompting tougher gun law proposals.
