On the Beach of Ostend

At the end of July 1914, Stefan Zweig was on vacation in the coastal town of Ostend. One day, a military detachment approached the beach with a machine gun thrown by a dog trap. One of Zweig’s friends began caressing one of those dogs, but the commanding officer shouted at him that he could not touch them. There was a threat of war. Germany had launched an ultimatum against Belgium.
