Oklahoma man set to be executed for killing his ex-girlfriend and her 7-month-old daughter
The state says Johnson’s attack left Whitaker with more than 20 wounds and killed her infant daughter in a house fire.
Raymond Eugene Johnson is scheduled to be executed Thursday at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary for the 2007 murders of his ex-girlfriend Brooke Whitaker and her 7-month-old daughter, Kya, in Tulsa.
In June 2007, Johnson attacked Whitaker with a claw hammer during an argument at her Tulsa home, then doused both victims and the house with gasoline before setting them on fire.
Although Johnson claimed to be a changed man at his clemency hearing, the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board denied his request in a 5-0 vote, while victims' family members urged the execution proceed.
Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond urged the board to deny clemency, stating Johnson's actions "shattered a family" and left three children without their mother and baby sister.
If executed, Johnson would be the 11th inmate put to death in the U.S. this year and the second in Oklahoma, ending a legal process spanning nearly 20 years.
